Going Permafree?

On November 8th, 2013, Before the Legend went live on Amazon. It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since I took the plunge and self-published my first book. What I didn’t realize then was that it was only the beginning of my self-publishing journey. Since then, I have published two more books, including the sequel Roman Identity.

I learned many things along the way through trial and error. But I also studied examples of other successful indie writers like David Gaughran when eBooks were starting to take off. Of course, one of the hardest things to this day when it comes to being an author and the writing/publishing process is after the book goes live. If you’re an author, you know firsthand the struggles of marketing. While I’ve tried different methods from email newsletters, giveaways, etc, one of my favorite and quickest ways to boost sales was running free/discounted promos on my books. And with Black Friday weekend and Cyber Monday being the busiest times of the year to shop, running free or discounted promos became my go-to marketing strategy over the years.

But this year, I wanted to do something I’ve never done before: offer a permafree book.

What does it mean to offer a permafree book? It means the book is going free permanently. Unlike a typical free promo that may last for a few days, a permafree book is free for an extended period. Of course, an author can decide at any point to price the book to its original price. Perhaps the author wants to test the waters, so they plan to set the book for free ninety days or six months. Or the author may decide to extend it for an indefinite period.

But if your goal is to sell more books, why would you make your book permafree?

While it may seem counterintuitive to profit from a free book, there are many strategic reasons why an author would intentionally set the price to $0.

  • Promote a book series
  • Attract new readers
  • Gain more exposure

Let’s discuss each of these reasons.

Promote a book series

Have you ever been to the store and bought two or more of the same items because of a bogo sale? Why buy just one hand soap if I can get two for the price of one? The same marketing strategy applies to books. Since readers are more likely to take a chance on a newer author, if the book is free, it makes sense to price one book in the series for free. Typically, the author will make the first book in the series free to entice readers to take a chance on the rest of the series. Setting the first book in the series free allows the reader to get a taste of your writing style and tone, and get introduced to your characters (if this is fiction).

If they liked the first book enough, they’re more likely to buy other books from the same author. And if you have a box set with three or more books, you doubled or tripled the books sold in one transaction!

Attract New Readers

Added Exposure

Getting new readers ultimately leads to increased exposure. As an indie writer, getting the added exposure is necessary to getting your book noticed in a sea of books. Glowing reviews and word of mouth are organic ways of growing your readership. And if the reviewer has a large social media following, there’s the potential that they could share the review among their followers, bringing more attention to your book. Setting your book free for an extended period allows more time for new readers to discover your free book.

But if you really want to maximize your readership, you will need to advertise your permafree book. Sites like BookBub and Freebooksy are great ways to promote your free book to thousands of avid readers because they can place your book in front of readers who are looking for books in your chosen genre. Each site will have a vetting process as to what books they accept, but promoting your free run to thousands of new readers can give your book the boost it needs to rise in important lists like top free downloads in your book’s respective categories. The number of times people download your book compared to books of the same category factor into your daily ranking. The higher the number of daily downloads, the higher your book appears on that category list. But why is this important for exposure?

For example, let’s say you type in a search result for “how to make lasagna” in Google. What search result are you going to click on? Typically, the top search results are the first ones you’ll click on. Those links will get more traffic because users will probably find what they are looking for on those first couple of results which are at the top of the page. Similarly, the higher your book ranks, the higher it appears it appears on lists and search results, which increases its visibility.

How to Make it Permafree?

Now that we discussed the benefits of making the book permafree and how to maximize its exposure while it’s free, how do you make it free permanently? If Amazon is your primary retailer, you will not be allowed to set the price to $0 directly, so you will have to match the price with an existing retailer that is selling your book for free. You can wait for Amazon to price-match to a competing retailer, but this can take days or weeks before they catch on and adjust the price. The easiest way to price-match is by adjusting the price through a third-party site like Draft2Digital (D2D) or Smashwords and then contacting Amazon. This is helpful because if your book is distributed across multiple retailers, these aggregator sites which serve as middlemen between you and the online retailers is that they set the price across multiple retailers for you versus you having to contact each individual retailer.

Since Draft2Digital also includes Smashwords as one of its retail channels, my preferred choice is D2D. If you haven’t already, first sign up for Draft2Digital and upload your book by following the steps found here.

Once the book is uploaded, go to the tab My Books, select your book and click on the 1st button: “Details.”

Then select under New Price select “$0”

After saving your changes. Navigate back to your Amazon KDP account and select Help. Under the Pricing category on the left, select Price Matching.

Once you get to this page, select the option: “I need more help.” This allows you the option to either send Amazon an email or call them. If you choose the email option, the system will direct you to an email template. The template will provide guidance on what to include in your inquiry, such as the direct link to your book on Amazon, the other countries where your book is sold, and the retailer where your book is available at a lower price. While calling is quicker, when I tried the email route, Amazon got back to me and made the adjustment at the end of the business day.

Overall, the process to price match turned out simpler than I thought. However, if you are running a time-sensitive free promotion, I would strongly encourage you to follow these steps the day before your promotion is announced in an email newsletter.

So will making Before the Legend prove to be a strategic move for me to 1) attract more readers to my Legend Series 2) and eventually drive sales to the sequel or future books? That remains to be seen. But for now, I’m hoping to follow the bandwagon and make the best of this Black Friday weekend by offering some amazing deals to all of my fans.

Before the Legend Going Free Again?

It’s been a long time from my last post. There’s a lot decisions to be weighed. With my new book: Roman Identity scheduled to be released later this summer, I didn’t want readers to forget the Legend that started it all. So this May I decided to share my debut middle-grade novelette Before the Legend to new readers for free.

Of course there’s obvious benefits to running a free promotion including but not limited to:

  • Increase exposure and interest to your author brand
  • Grow book reviews
  • Drive more email subscribers (if you have a newsletter)
  • And increase future sales to other books in the series

For all the writers out there reading this, what’s not to love? It’s no wonder why some writers choose to make one of their books permafree. Especially if you have a book coming up soon.

Today, Before the Legend is currently holding steady at the #1 spot in Children’s Greek & Roman Myths and I couldn’t have done it without the help from readers.

And if you haven’t gotten a copy of the eBook already it yours for free too on Kindle… but only till May 11th.

Click on the banner to get your copy today!

*A Special Thanks*

To all my followers who have followed this book, my series or my blog posts, thank you for your support. You are part of the reason I didn’t give up and continue to push myself to write. I want you to be the first to learn about my new release, promos and exclusive content.

What I Learned from Going Free

Summer still sizzles on in the month of August. It’s been approximately 2 months since the launch of my free book run. With all free book runs they eventually run their course. After getting encouraged by a blogger to share what sites I found to be most cost-effective in promoting my book, logically this topic would be my next post. While I admit I don’t fully understand all the variables that factored in, here’s some of the overall lessons I gleaned as I share my results during and after the free run. Prepping for Free Promotion

Key word to this promotion. Free. Well at least mostly.

After mulling the idea of a cinematic trailer, I finally set to work to release a brand new book trailer for my 4th book, Chasing Blue. It was a lot of work but I believe it was worth the effort and I hope you guys enjoy it. The trailer comes at a time where I’m also prepping for my free run for Before the Legend. From Friday June 12th to 16th, the eBook will be going free on Amazon for Kindle.

Considering I’ve done a free run before, I already have an idea of what to expect. When I first tried it last year, I had a measure of success considering I wasn’t enrolled in KDP Select and had to wait for Amazon to price-match when I dropped the price to $0 via Smashwords. The first day I had hundreds of downloads, and eventually rose to #1 briefly in my respective category. I attribute the success largely to FreeBooksy, although I did use Pixel of Ink too to promote my free run (they are no longer accepting free books at the moment). It also helped I chose a category with fewer works to compete with (eg. Juvenile Fiction / Legends, Myths, Fables / Greek & Roman), which is a tip I picked up from reading David Gaughran’s book Let’s Get Visible. That was the first time my book got that much attention and considering my sales rank rose exponentially that gave me a boost in visibility in an already flooded book market.

However like all good things it must come to an end. One of the biggest challenges I faced when doing a free-run the first time around was keeping the momentum going. After the first two days the number of downloads dropped drastically. By the end of my free run, my sales rank continually slipped until I was no longer in the top 3 spots. By the time it was over, I probably had sold one book.

I think this is a problem a lot of authors out there face when doing a free run. So what to do about keeping the momentum? To be honest it’s extremely difficult to maintain a high sales rank and eventually land on the best sellers list on Amazon during and after the free run. Free runs attract anybody, even people who will download your work whether there genuinely interested in the genre/work or not. I have to shamefully admit I have hurried up to download a free book only to still not have read it. It happens. You buy it out of impulse. That’s part of the sales catch to free runs. The offer is “too good to pass up.” And of course it doesn’t make it better I don’t own a Kindle and my Kindle previewer on my laptop decided it doesn’t want to work anymore. But I digress. So what is an author to do to maximize the success of their free run during and after?

Preparation is Key

To maximize results I needed an actual plan before launching head first into it, which is part of the reason I postponed it to time where I can plan who and how to promote the book promotion. On Digital Book Today, author Ruth Francisco shares some really great strategies to take before, during and after you start your free run. Here are some of the big ones I plan to use…

Before the Free Run

  • Try to get a couple of reviews before starting your free promotion. Having honest feedback already, helps readers to make an informed decision about  your work, giving you an added advantage. There is no magic number to the number of reviews to have although the author states having 6.
  • Days before the free run consider upping the price. That way readers feel like they’re getting a bargain.
  • Timing is important. Wed, Thurs, and Sunday are usually good days. I plan to test out staggering my free promotion perhaps space out the days.
  • Start contacting sites that will promote your free runs. Most sites prefer at least a week’s notice. Some sites like  ENT (Ereader News Today) will need to be notified a month in advance. So plan accordingly.

During the Free Run

  • Alert your followers on social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Twitter etc. about your free run.
  • Add a comment about your free book to the Amazon Kindle Forum. The author suggests doing this early in the morning the day your free promotion begins.

Post Free Run

What are some things you can do after the free run to lift your sales rank after the dreaded drop?

  • Try gifting a few copies to readers. In turn it will help boost your sales rank which tends to slip after a free run.
  • Run $.99 promotion. Although I plan to spend very little on advertising during my free run. A little advertising could be a good idea especially the days after your free run.

Well these are the tips I’ve gathered. For those like me that don’t feel like dishing out a whole bunch of money for a “free” promotion here are relatively free sites that you post your free book to.

I might add some more to this list. As always check their policies. Some sites due to high demand may charge you to guarantee you a reserved spot. In addition if you want to be featured be prepared to pay extra. Although just to be listed it should be free. Feel free to add free sites you found in the comments below.

Spotlight on the Author

You need to get noticed.

That’s the sentiment that echoes in my ears. The goal of increased visibility for my book, Before the Legend is an on-going challenge as I enter the final week of my free promo week which ends this Saturday (you don’t want to miss it). Check out the “Buy Now” page under the tab “Before the Legend” to see the most up-to-date info on participating retailers.

I’m generally a reserved, private person, so the general thought of being in the public eye is something I shy away from. With a new book out though, I can sure use some added exposure. That being said author interviews are a great way for readers to get introduced to and get connected with new authors and readers. Learning about the author can be the first step in piquing a reader’s interest in your works and establishing a loyal fan base. I’m pleased to say with the right persistence I have been able to land a few author interviews including my latest interview with fellow author, Megan, who was kind of enough to ask me some questions about myself and my work, including things you won’t find on my About Page. You can read the full interview at Megan’s Blog .

In addition to my interview with Megan. I also was featured on Free Booksy, a site designed to promote free eBooks especially Kindle books. It’s a great site for readers to find free Kindle versions of the books they like, and great for authors who want to promote a free run their doing for their books to encourage more downloads. You can find my full feature spotlight at this link: http://freebooksy.com/freebooks/2014/1/15/before-the-legend-free-kindle-book

Important Note: My giveaway has come to an end. Congrats to the five winners, which can be found on my Facebook Page. However the Free Run of my eBook is still available for 3 more days.
